The lock agent
The agent is a small Windows service or macOS daemon the customer installs once. It checks in every 60 seconds, so an admin can lock or unlock any unit from the order or the stock record and the machine responds within the minute. A locked laptop stays locked offline, and a unit that goes quiet past your grace window locks itself.

The completed inspection keeps the evidence attached. Failures become defects with a severity, critical and major ones open a repair job and hold the unit out of availability, and the finished report goes to the customer as a PDF.

Guard is asset tracking and a lock, not surveillance. It does not read documents, capture the screen, log keystrokes or track browsing, and it does not report what the machine is used for. It reports the hardware, when the device last checked in, and whether it is locked. Locking a customer's machine must also be covered by your rental agreement — a contract question, not a software one, and our contracts module can carry the clause.

Within a minute. The agent checks in with Rentablez every 60 seconds, so a lock or unlock is picked up on the next check-in. Until the laptop confirms, the board shows the unit as lock pending rather than locked, so you are never told a machine is locked when it has not answered yet.
Not easily. The agent runs as a Windows service hardened so stop and delete requests are refused, with a watchdog task that restores it if the service is disabled. A determined administrator with enough time can still interfere with software on a machine they physically hold, so treat Guard as a strong deterrent and an evidence trail rather than an absolute. The right to lock the device must also be written into your rental agreement.
A locked laptop stays locked, because the verdict is already stored on the device. A laptop that is not locked but stays offline past the grace window you configure locks itself by policy, so disconnecting is not a way out. Everything returns to normal on the next successful check-in.
